If you are feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. The world feels like a lot right now. Yes, it’s the most wonderful time of the year, but the holidays can be overwhelming, overstimulating, and overindulging.
Prioritizing self-care is essential right now — good sleep, clean food, and adequate movement are key. But sometimes, even getting those basics in can feel overwhelming.
In a world that capitalizes on our stress, I suggest walking through the world with your head held high, as an “act of defiance,” literally, against gravity, but also against the chronic drains on our energy that life continually deals us.
Finding your way back to center is hero’s work, in no small part, because it takes work.
Self-care requires action. That is the awkward catch-22 here. How do I add in one more thing when I’m already overwhelmed?
Thankfully, as a Neuro Performance Coach, I have a plethora of simple tools to help make standing upright against the winds of life easier and more sustainable.
Here are five simple things you can try to pull yourself from feeling overwhelmed.
- Stare at something far away. Looking at the bigger picture can literally help calm the brain down.
- Stand in the sunshine. If you need help finding the light within, start with the big light in the sky.
- Tap into your physical strength. Remind yourself how strong and capable you are. This can be as simple as doing some wall push-ups or getting up and down off of your couch a few times.
- Change something up. Take a different way home, brush your teeth with the other hand, or perhaps walk backward. Firing up new neural pathways can help open up our thinking to new solutions.
- Challenge your balance. This will literally help you find your center.
Try sprinkling these suggestions into your daily life and say goodbye to holiday overwhelm.
