Now that the highly-anticipated film “Wicked” has finally hit theaters, the big question is, “Does it live up to the hype?”
This film is everywhere. Cast members are popping up on talk shows, stores have merchandise galore and everyone is humming “Defying Gravity.” Often, expectations are set too high for any movie to possibly deliver. Thankfully, this is not the case. Director Jon M. Chu gives devoted fans everything they could want, and the uninitiated will be drawn in by dazzling special effects and big-name stars. Anyone familiar with Chu’s previous work in “Crazy Rich Asians,” knows he is capable of creating a visual delight.
The appeal is taking a story we all know so well, “The Wizard of Oz,” and turning it completely on its head. The story opens long before the twister drops Dorothy in Oz. Instead, “Wicked” centers on Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), otherwise known as The Wicked Witch of the West. We follow her origin story and meet some familiar characters along the way. During her time at school, Elphaba meets Glinda, a future Good Witch of Oz. The relationship is life altering for both young women, but not in the ways you may assume.
The casting choices are spot on. Jeff Goldblum relishes his slick character as The Wizard of Oz and Ariana Grande steals the show as the over-the-top Glinda. Although Cynthia Erivo may not be as familiar as some of the other cast members, she brings a depth and heart to Elphaba, and definitely has the vocal chops.
This is a film made for the big screen. The movie is an escape that allows you to be transported to a magical place. It is suitable for the whole family, but be warned, just like in “The Wizard of Oz,” those flying monkeys may cause some shivers!
Audiences will question everything they believe they know about this classic tale. In doing so, viewers will be forced to take a step back and realize, before we pass judgment, we may not always know the whole story. This also serves as a great lesson for us to carry into real life.
It is important to note this movie is only part one in the tale. Part two is scheduled to be released in November 2025. It may be a test of your patience to wait that long, but if part one is any indication, it will be worth the wait.
